As a mentee, you will have the support and guidance of a mentor who will encourage, guide and support you in your personal and professional development. You will be able to grow your network and acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be the best that you can be. It is not appropriate for the mentor to provide advice or guidance on your personal relationships.
Engaging in business or personal relationships with your mentor is strictly prohibited. Please keep your mentor-mentee relationship professional.
To become a mentee, you will have to submit your registration form to the SJIOBA Secretariat. The registration form can be found HERE or on our SJIOBA JMC App. After the necessary verifications are completed you will receive an email to inform you that your mentoring account has been setup. Thereafter you will be able to access the Mentor Directory to browse through the list of mentors. Select the mentor that is most suited to you and contact the mentor through email or phone to introduce yourself. The mentor must agree to mentor and the mentee must agree to be mentored before the mentoring can commence. Each mentor is allowed to mentor three mentees.
Each mentor should be able to mentor you for a period between one to six months depending on the type of mentoring your require. Once the agreed goals are met, the mentor-mentee relationship will end. The mentor has been asked to give you at least one month’s notice if the mentor-mentee relationship has to be ended early. This will give you enough time to find another mentor from our directory of mentors. If the mentor-mentee relationship is not working out, please let us know by contacting the SJIOBA Secretariat and we will do our best to assist and to resolve the matter.
DOs and DON’Ts for Mentees
Know what you want to achieve and communicate this to your mentor so that your mentor can guide and support you in the correct manner.
Be honest and open with your mentor.
Be proactive in the mentor-mentee relationship.
Schedule time for the mentoring meetings and do not cancel unless it is truly necessary.
Make the most out of your meeting with your mentor by being prepared for the meeting. Know what you would like to ask and discuss. Meetings with your mentor are to discuss matters related to the goals agreed between your and your mentor. It is not a chit chat session.
Respond to your mentor’s emails and feedbacks in a timely manner.
Whatever that is discussed between you and your mentor is to be strictly kept Private and Confidential. If you need to discuss it with other, you should get your mentor’s concern first.
Seek advice on everything. Keep to the agreed goals.
Expect the mentor to be knowledgeable in everything and have answers to every question that you may have.
Blame the mentor if the advice given does not work. Always consider the advice given before you act on it. The decision is yours.
Commit to more than you can manage.
Cancel meetings unnecessarily or at the last minute. Let your mentor know in advance.
